Other descriptive data: Oral history interview recording 4 of 4 with Kevin Fitzgerald, Charles McCarthy, and Dan Weldon conducted by Judy Neiswander. The three men grew up together in Mission Hill and reminisce about shared childhood memories playing Little League, tag rush (a version of football), stickball, and half-ball with other children in the neighborhood. They recall other memories such as children waiting to ride in a local man’s ice and oil truck, children gathering at a boy’s house on Saturday to watch television, playing in areas such as the “Ledge” (Harvard Quarry), the “Banking”, “Fisher Mountains”, Parker Hill Field, and White Field, making bonfires from discarded Christmas trees, and discovering a canoe in Muddy River at the Back Bay Fens. The friends also talk about the good-natured relationship between children and police in the neighborhood while they were growing up.Fitzgerald, McCarthy, and Weldon describe attending Mission Grammar School and then Mission High School. They talk about the changing demographic of Mission Hill from predominantly Irish Catholic to an increase in the African American, Cuba, and Puerto Rican population. The three friends also reflect on the strong relational ties among the people who live in Mission Hill. They agree that the survival of Mission Hill as a neighborhood requires the existence of families who stay in the neighborhood to build community.Other topics mentioned include: the yearly fall Harvest Festival held at the Grammar School and the difference in experiences between the boys and girls who attended parochial schools
